Mexico and Early Twenties

1970 - 1985

Vicki moved with her family to Guadalajara, Mexico in the early ‘70s at the age of 14 where she attended a private school. Although resistant to the change at first, she grew to love Mexico – its people, its culture, its language and its scenery. She married Rodolfo at the young age of 17 and always remembered the fun and wild times they had together with many, many friends. Her favorite memories of that time involved living in a converted bus on the beach and buying milk and tortillas from a local woman. Vicki returned to the states in the late 1970s and experienced culture shock. She said it took a few years for her to acclimate to the American way of life. During this time, she lived briefly with her sister, Sue and her husband Gary in Southern California. She eventually moved further north, spending time with her sister Jane in Williams. There, she met Scott who taught her to drive a semi, and together they took to the road for a couple of years. Tired of the road, she settled in Oregon where she landed a job as one of the only female truck drivers for Safeway stores.
