2000 to 2010

2000 - 2010

Vicki was diagnosed with Stage IV, Non-small cell lung cancer on June 14, 2000. At the time, the cancer was found to be in her left lung, in her lymph nodes and in her brain. The doctors did not expect her to live beyond a year and a half, even with aggressive treatment. In typical Vicki fashion, she swallowed the news and asked what she had to do to “beat this thing.” It did not matter to her what the doctors said because she knew it wasn’t her time. Over the next ten years she underwent seven chemotherapy treatments, whole brain radiation, a clinical trial, stereotactic brain radiation, radiation to her chest and brain surgery. She made it through each treatment with the courage and strength rarely seen in others. The doctors called her their “miracle patient.” But Vicki didn’t consider herself a miracle. She simply thought herself lucky and was grateful for each day. In 2000, she and Joan spent time in Apple Valley, CA with brother Guy. They then moved back to Oregon, and bought a house in Clackamas, OR. Their love of kayaking soon had them moving further north, where in 2004 (on their anniversary) they purchased land in Port Angeles, WA from Cindy and Paul (who have since become dear friends) and went on to build a home. It was while living in Port Angeles that Vicki discovered her love of and her talent for glass fusing, thanks in part to teacher, Melissa, whose patience and loving nature helped Vicki develop her skills. Vicki spent the last couple years of her life working on glass projects, taking care of her home and animals, traveling throughout the peninsula, and spending time with family and friends. Vicki made her transition at 1:40 a.m. on July 5th. She was at home surrounded by family and friends. She is missed by all.
